Introducing Port Cottage: A Restoration Story Rooted in Community

Nestled within the historic fabric of the old Richmond Arms Hotel, The Port Cottage has been lovingly restored as a vibrant new community asset on the Moray coastline. This special property came into the ownership of the Trust in February 2022, following a lease agreement with Crown Estate Scotland—a moment that marked the beginning of an exciting transformation.

Thanks to generous funding from the Scottish Land Fund, the building was officially purchased and placed in the hands of the community, ensuring its preservation and future use.

With a vision to convert Port Cottage into a short-term let that supports local sustainability, tourism, and heritage, further funding was secured from four dedicated supporters:

Their combined contributions have helped us reimagine the space while honouring its historic charm.

Staring with a major strip out of all the existing Latham plaster, this was the start of the journey!

This project also aligns with the Scottish Government’s national policy on tackling vacant and derelict land, promoting community-led reuse of underused spaces to stimulate economic regeneration, wellbeing, and resilience across Scotland.

Crafted by Local Hands

The renovation work was carried out with pride and precision by local Findochty-based contractor Gary Wilson and his team of tradespeople, who picked up the project partway through and brought it to completion. Their efforts were strongly supported by the experienced architects Craig and Alex at CM Design Elgin, whose guidance ensured every aspect of the project met both modern standards and heritage considerations.

A core principle of the project has been to reinvest in the local economy. The majority of the cottage’s fixtures and fittings have been purchased right here in Buckie, ensuring local businesses benefitted directly from the renovation. We are proud to have worked with:

Looking Ahead

As Port Cottage prepares to welcome its first guests, it stands as more than just a beautifully restored building—it represents what’s possible when community, heritage, and collaboration come together. Our Vice-Chair and Portgordon Historian, Professor Peter Reid, generously provided a collection of historical photographs that capture the rich maritime, industrial, and social history of Portgordon. These materials will be displayed within the cottage for guests to explore and reflect on the village’s heritage.

Whether it’s images of bustling harbourside scenes, iconic landmarks, or portraits of everyday village life, these carefully curated displays offer a heartfelt tribute to the people and stories that shaped Portgordon through the decades.
