Some years ago, a group of residents came up with the idea of a village newsletter to keep everyone informed and connected so the Community Newsletter, known as the Portgordon Post was created. It was then archived.
It was in 2013 that the knowledge of the existence of this publication resurfaced and by Spring 2014 the Post was relaunched.
The editorial team led by Pringle George gathered news, views and advertised events and Pringles’ husband, Mike, an experienced former journalist took on the role of editor. Four editions each year kept everyone up to date with what was happening within the village. Copies were available at various outlets and donations sought to go towards the costs as well as sponsorships by local businesses.
The Post team needed to continually raise funds so many successful events began to gain momentum. A Taste of Portgordon, local businesses selling their goods, Christmas Markets, a Commemoration Concert recognising the end of WW1 with poppy decorated cakes for afternoon tea. Further events celebrating VE day, with a big band evening, stovies and more cake, Squarefest Christmas event, all these and many more occasions earning funds to keep the newsletter operating and offering exciting times for all the village.
The editorial team made the decision to support charities for the WW1 and VE commemorations and
Poppy Scotland, The Royal British Legion and Erskine Care Homes were chosen. An initiative of making knitted and crochet poppies became very popular and together with the aforementioned events and a memory tree, The Post was able to donate over £900 to Poppy Scotland, £300 to the Royal British Legion and £1025 to Erskine Care Homes. An achievement to be very proud of.
In 2015 a successful application was granted by the Big Lottery fund to purchase new computers, a printer, laptop, camera, and office equipment which were housed in the former Lampie Hoose, the registered office for the Post. A computer learning group also benefitted from the up-to-date equipment.
In 2018 an idea formed to purchase an A3 printer to enable the team to print their own copies in a greater number, which would then be distributed, by several volunteers, to every home in the village. The bid was successful and the dream of being self-sufficient realised, with the team able to fulfil their ambition of reaching every home in the village.
The concept of the Post is still the same, to keep everyone informed of what’s happening in the village, even with online communications the publication and distribution of the Community Newsletter is still relevant, and the Post is still functioning within the Community Trust
Funds are needed to keep this active, and we continue to be very grateful for every valuable donation received. We are proud of the founding team responsible for the relaunch of the publication, Pringle & Mike George who set a very high standard for everyone to aim for.
