With a notable demonstration of volunteer good will, capacity and resource, they have developed an area of land into a Community Garden, with the intention of providing accessibility to produce food for a community café, improve mental well-being, providing as educational space used by the local nursery school and other community events that aim to bring people together to enjoy the space.

Volunteers have been developing and nurturing our Community Garden. This is an initiative that has a multi-level approach to community wellbeing, providing space and connection for residents to use, growing food for community consumption and demonstrating our aspirations for a carbon neutral approach using sustainable and organic materials collected locally.

The Community Garden has been well established and developed the area to allow access for all abilities. The group have tested and adjusted through their first year of growing and have produced many types of food. They have inspired residents to make delicious meals by demonstrating their uses and providing video and photos to share across our social media platforms.

Spring has arrived and the Community Gardeners have been busy planning what we are hoping to grow this year. We have begun the work of improving the soil and growing areas around the garden as well as
sowing seeds for the season ahead. We have prepared a couple of new vegetable beds for us to expand our range of crops.


The Polycrubs are open for a period of time each day for watering and maintenance and we will begin opening again for the public in April.


The Hot Composter is now in place and any vegetable waste or garden vegetation should be cut up small to 4cms or less before adding to the hot composter. Other garden waste can be added to our cold compost area.


There is always a need for new volunteers, to share knowledge, sow seeds, pot up small seedlings, general gardening work such as weeding, watering, and opening, and closing the polytunnels. You can spend a little time or a lot of time helping at the garden with the variety of jobs for all abilities.


We love to see people visiting the Portgordon Community Garden , please feel free to come and have a look around or just pop in past for a blether.

The gardens will be open daily to residents and visitors to our village from beginning of April till End of October.

Opening times are between 8-9.30am
Closing times are between 4-5pm
