I have an incredible story to share with all of you today!

Meet two extraordinary individuals, both hailing from our beloved Portgordon. They grew up together, attended the local school just after the war, and have recently had the most emotional reunion after an astonishing 70 years!

🏡 Let’s turn back the clock to the 1950s when these two cousins, George Alexander Reid and his cousin Laurense lived in the same house, where George was born and spent time exploring the beautiful streets of Portgordon, attending the same school, and creating memories. Time flew by, and life took them on separate paths, with Laurense and her mother moving to Northern Ireland having married a gentleman in the Merchant Navy, and George and his family remaining in Portgordon.

⌛️ Fast forward to the present day, and for Laurens’s 80th Birthday she decided that a reunion and visit to her hometown was in order. Accompanied by her daughter Paula, this saw visits to folks from her class, a walk round Portgordon Primary School and a tour of her old haunts, though much has changed since she was last here. The overwhelming joy they experienced when recognising each other was simply indescribable. It was as if no time had passed at all!

🤗 George and Laurense told me a fascinating story, about how her mother was due to sail on the RMS Lusitania, which was sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of Northern Ireland, killing all on board. The train that was taking her to catch the doomed crossing was held up because a tree had fallen and blocked the line, meaning they were unable to make the voyage. Had this twist of fate not occurred, Laurense would have lost her mother. George and Laurense have been reminiscing about their childhood adventures, sharing stories of their families, and catching up, and of course having a tour from George to see how much Portgordon has changed since she was last here 70 years ago.

đź’– This story is a testament to the power of family and the profound impact of childhood memories. It serves as a beautiful reminder that even after many years and miles apart, with Laurense now living in Leicester, Portgordon is still the place she remembers as home.

Congratulations George and Laurense on your incredible reunion after 70 years. Here’s to the power of love, connections, and the enduring spirit of Portgordon!
