In a heartfelt tribute to the work undertaken by 69 Gurkha Independent Field Squadron , our community came together on a bright Sunday afternoon to witness the unveiling of a significant memorial: the Gurkha Plaque, refurbished by Crown estate Scotland and erected by Moray Blast. This ceremony, held at Portgordon Harbour, marked an important moment of recognition and gratitude for the Gurkha soldiers who came three times to Portgordon, between 1985 and 1987 as part of “Ex Famous Grouse”.

The event was attended by our Patron, Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire, Andrew Simpson and Hon Lt Menbahadur Gurung of the North East Gurkha Association Scotland, local leaders, and members of the community, who gathered in great numbers to learn about this pivotal time in Portgordon’s history and show admiration for the Gurkha legacy. As the plaque was unveiled, met with applause and quiet reflection, it symbolised more than just a piece of metal on stone—it stood as a lasting tribute to the legacy left by the Gurkha soldiers and in friendship.

Throughout the ceremony, Proffessor Peter Reid shared heartfelt stories, reflecting on the rich history and profound contributions of the Gurkha’s.

The unveiling of the Gurkha Plaque was not merely a ceremonial gesture; it was a reaffirmation of our community’s deep commitment to remembering the work done to repair the harbour structure as past of a joint venture between the military and the local authority. It stands as a reminder that the bonds forged in service extend beyond borders and cultures, uniting us in our appreciation for the impact this had on the community.
